Krishnapuram Palace houses Kerala's largest single-panel mural, the 154-square-foot Gajendra Moksham depicting an elephant king's salvation by Vishnu, painted in mineral and vegetable pigments across one wall of a palace built after Travancore's 1746 conquest of the neighbouring kingdom of Odanad. King Marthanda Varma commissioned the present structure on the site of an older palace belonging to the defeated Kayamkulam royal family, folding a rival dynasty's seat directly into his own expanding state — a political statement built in stone and timber rather than declared in a treaty. The complex today covers 2.55 acres, a fraction of the 56 acres it once occupied, and functions as an archaeological museum holding Travancore-era bronzes, paintings, and the ceremonial Kayamkulam sword taken from the defeated royal house.
