For the serious traveller, Delhi functions as both a destination and a gateway. The great Mughal monuments — the UNESCO-listed Red Fort and Humayun's Tomb, and the Jama Masjid — anchor itineraries heading onwards to Rajasthan or Agra, but the city richly rewards those who treat it as the primary subject. The neighbourhood of Mehrauli, centred on the Qutub Minar complex, contains more medieval stonework in a single square kilometre than most European capitals can offer in their entirety. Nizamuddin Basti, the Sufi quarter that grew around the dargah of Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya, operates as a medieval village somehow lodged inside a modern city: qawwali singing on Thursday evenings, narrow lanes fragrant with rosewater and biryani, and a Mughal garden tomb just minutes away.

Climate is extreme: winters (December–February) bring fog so thick that early-morning flights are routinely cancelled and monuments vanish in a photogenic but frustrating white haze. Summers push past 43°C. October and November offer the clearest skies before the fog season, though air quality across the National Capital Territory deteriorates sharply after Diwali with seasonal crop-burning smoke drifting from Haryana and Punjab. The Delhi Metro — with lines covering all major heritage zones — renders auto-rickshaw negotiation largely optional for monument-hopping, though the last kilometre to Humayun's Tomb and several Mehrauli sites still demands either a cycle-rickshaw or a firm grasp of bargaining norms.
