Rajasthan occupies the northwestern shoulder of peninsular India, sharing an international border with Pakistan's Sindh and Punjab provinces. Its topography divides cleanly into three distinct corridors: the Aravalli hill spine running northeast to southwest, the semi-arid Shekhawati plains to the north, and the Great Thar Desert consuming roughly the western 60 percent. The Aravallis, among Earth's oldest mountain ranges at over 1,500 million years old, form a geological spine that historically separated the agricultural east from the desert west — a divide that shaped trade routes, water management, and military strategy for a thousand years.

Travel windows matter more in Rajasthan than almost anywhere in India. October through early March is the operational window: temperatures range from 8°C at night in December to a comfortable 26°C by afternoon. April through June delivers sustained temperatures above 42°C in cities and above 48°C in the Thar; the forts become furnaces by 11 AM. The monsoon (July–September) brings welcome relief but also flash-flooding on the Jaipur–Ajmer highway and temporary closures at Ranthambore. Serious travellers arrive in November — post-Diwali crowds have dispersed, humidity has dropped, and the Pushkar Camel Fair (late October or November, ending at the Kartik full moon) provides a raw, uncurated spectacle that no orchestrated desert camp can replicate.
