About Ladakh

Ladakh, designated a union territory in August 2019 when the former state of Jammu & Kashmir was bifurcated, occupies a vast trans-Himalayan plateau at elevations ranging from 2,750 metres in the Kargil district to over 5,600 metres at the highest motorable passes. It is bound by the Karakoram range to the north, the Great Himalayas to the south, and shares international boundaries with Pakistan and China. For most of its recorded history, Ladakh functioned as an independent kingdom — the Namgyal dynasty ruled from Leh Palace from the 16th century until Dogra forces annexed it in 1834 — and the region's cultural architecture, monastic traditions, and spoken Ladakhi language retain traces of that sovereign identity.

The landscape is a geological spectacle: stripped of moisture by the rain shadow effect of the Himalayas, the terrain reveals itself in naked geological strata of ochre, mauve, burgundy, and grey. River valleys — cut by the Indus, Shyok, Nubra, and Zanskar rivers — sustain narrow ribbons of irrigated agriculture: barley, peas, apricots. Beyond those green strips, the land is stark and planetary.

Acclimatisation is not optional. Leh sits at 3,524 metres, and the combination of low barometric pressure and reduced oxygen partial pressure causes acute mountain sickness in a significant proportion of first-time visitors. The standard protocol is two full rest days at Leh before attempting any excursion to higher elevations like Pangong Tso (4,350m) or Khardung La (5,359m). Alcohol, heavy meals, and strenuous physical exertion should be avoided during the first 48 hours. Medical-grade oxygen cylinders are available at pharmacies in Leh's main bazaar.

The tourist season runs from May through September. Manali–Leh Highway typically opens in late May; Srinagar–Leh Highway by early April in milder years. Winter in Leh (November through March) is extreme, with temperatures dropping to minus 20°C or lower, and most guesthouses and restaurants shutting down entirely.
