Maharashtra is not a state you ease into — it announces itself. The Western Ghats, a UNESCO-recognised biodiversity zone of basalt and laterite, drop sharply to a narrow coastal strip where fishing communities have lived for two thousand years alongside traders from Arabia, Portugal, and Britain. Inland, the Deccan plateau stretches in tawny expanses of sugarcane and cotton fields, interrupted by the volcanic plugs and step-well fortresses that Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj used to forge his empire in the seventeenth century.

Mumbai, the state capital, concentrates the contradictions of modern India into a single peninsula. It is a city of Victorian Gothic railway terminals and glass-skinned towers, of Dharavi's circular economy and Malabar Hill's old-money Parsi apartments. The city does not perform for visitors; it simply operates, at a speed and density that can overwhelm the uninitiated and intoxicate the seasoned traveller.

Beyond the metropolis, the state rewards persistence. Ajanta's fifth-century Buddhist murals in Cave 1 — the bodhisattva Padmapani holding a blue lotus — represent the apex of ancient Indian painting. Ellora places Buddhist, Hindu, and Jain monuments within walking distance of each other, a geological feat of rock-cut ambition that took four centuries to complete. The Konkan coast, reached by train on one of the world's great scenic railway routes, conceals sea-forts, cashew orchards, and a fish-centred cuisine that owes nothing to the interior.

The state's best months align with its agricultural rhythms: October through February, when the Deccan heat has broken and the Ghats have dried from monsoon green back to ochre. Pune, Nashik, Aurangabad, and Kolhapur each carry distinct cultural identities — do not mistake Maharashtra for a single story.
