About Uttar Pradesh

Uttar Pradesh is the most populous state in India and, in terms of sheer historical density, arguably its most consequential. Stretching across the great Gangetic plain from the Himalayan foothills in the north to the Vindhya escarpment in the south, it encompasses the ruins of the Mauryan empire at Sarnath, the Mughal imperial capitals of Agra and Fatehpur Sikri, the sacred ghats of Varanasi, and the refined Nawabi culture of Lucknow — all within a single administrative boundary. The state's landscape is largely flat alluvial terrain, interrupted by the Yamuna and Ganges rivers that have served for millennia as trade arteries, pilgrimage routes, and dynastic frontiers.

For the traveller, Uttar Pradesh demands more than a single visit. Agra alone — home to three UNESCO World Heritage Sites within forty kilometres of each other — can absorb three full days without repetition. Varanasi, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities on earth, operates on a rhythm entirely its own: dawn boat rides on the Ganga, cremation pyres burning day and night at Manikarnika Ghat, and temple bells that begin before 4 AM. Lucknow rewards those who linger in the old city's tehzeeb — courtly refinement expressed in its chikankari embroidery workshops, the crumbling grandeur of the Bara Imambara, and a street food culture centred on the seekh kebab and biryani traditions of the Awadhi kitchen.

Best visited between October and March, when temperatures across the plain sit between 8°C and 28°C. Monsoon (July–September) brings oppressive humidity and occasional flooding along the Yamuna corridor. April through June is brutal: surface temperatures in Agra regularly exceed 45°C, and the Taj Mahal's white Makrana marble becomes uncomfortably hot underfoot by mid-morning. Early-morning fog in December and January can reduce visibility to under 200 metres, rendering sunrise visits to the Taj meaningless — though it produces a haunting diffused light beloved by photographers willing to accept uncertainty.
