The Qutb Shahi imprint survives in granite forts and blackened-limestone mosques across the Old City, while the later Asaf Jahi Nizams, who ruled from 1724 until Hyderabad's 1948 accession to India, layered in the palaces, libraries, and idiosyncratic art collections — Chowmahalla Palace and the Salar Jung Museum among them — that give the city its second major architectural identity.

Hussain Sagar Lake, an artificial reservoir built in 1563, physically divides the older city from Secunderabad, its twin cantonment town to the north, and the necklace of roads circling the lake remains the clearest orientation point for first-time visitors. Further west, Gachibowli and Madhapur form the HITEC City corridor, a separate, newer Hyderabad built around information-technology and pharmaceutical industries since the 1990s, distinct enough from the Old City in architecture and pace that visitors often experience them as two different urban environments within one metropolitan area.

Rajiv Gandhi International Airport at Shamshabad handles the bulk of arrivals, roughly 25–30 kilometres from most Old City sites, while Secunderabad Junction, Hyderabad Deccan (Nampally), and Kacheguda serve as the city's principal railway stations. A metro rail network, opened in stages from 2017, connects several key corridors though it does not yet reach the Old City's densest heritage cluster. October through March brings dry, comparatively cool weather best suited to walking the Old City's forts, palaces, and bazaars; April through June turns punishingly hot for extended outdoor sightseeing.
