Narasimhavarman I, the king remembered by his title Mamalla, or 'great wrestler', commissioned most of the site's rock-cut caves and monolithic rathas in the mid-seventh century, while his successor Narasimhavarman II added the free-standing Shore Temple a generation later — the shift from carving into solid rock to building with quarried blocks is visible by walking the site in that order. European sailors who passed the coast in later centuries reported a row of ornate temples along the shoreline, a legend that gave the town its old nickname, the Seven Pagodas, and that the 2004 tsunami partly corroborated by exposing submerged stonework offshore. Today's Group of Monuments at Mahabalipuram, inscribed by UNESCO in 1984, spans a fenced, ticketed core at Shore Temple and Five Rathas alongside a scatter of free, open-air caves and reliefs across town, plus Tiger Cave several kilometres north at Saluvankuppam. Chennai's airport and the ECR highway put the town within a half-day trip of the state capital, which makes it one of the most visited single-day excursions in Tamil Nadu, and the seasonal window from October to March keeps both heat and monsoon rain at bay for the granite hillside walking that most of the sightseeing requires. A single dedicated day covers the ticketed core and the free hillside cluster; a second half-day allows time for Tiger Cave and the beach.
