Salar Jung Museum holds more than 43,000 catalogued art objects across roughly 38 galleries, assembled almost entirely by one collector rather than by state acquisition over generations. Mir Yousuf Ali Khan, who served as Salar Jung III and held the office of Diwan (prime minister) to the Nizam of Hyderabad, spent his private income for decades buying sculpture, manuscripts, clocks, textiles, and weaponry from across Europe, the Middle East, and Asia, and the museum still organizes its galleries roughly along the lines of his personal collecting categories rather than a conventional chronological or regional layout. The building itself, opened in 1968 on the southern bank of the Musi River in Dar-ul-Shifa, was purpose-built after the collection outgrew the Salar Jung family's own Diwan Deodi residence, and it now holds Institute of National Importance status under the Ministry of Culture.

Mir Yousuf Ali Khan inherited both his grandfather's and father's earlier collections when he took the Salar Jung title in 1914, then spent the following decades adding to them with a personal intensity that made the family collection one of the largest ever assembled by a single individual in South Asia.
