عن Templo Mayor and Museo del Templo Mayor
Templo Mayor in Mexico City charges MXN 210 for foreign adults as of 2026 and shows the excavated ruins of the main temple of Tenochtitlan, the Mexica capital, beside the Zócalo. The ruins consist of stepped platforms of volcanic tezontle and carved basalt, viewed from raised walkways, and the museum next door houses the offerings, sculptures and ritual objects recovered from the site. Templo Mayor was a double pyramid, with one shrine to Huitzilopochtli, the war and sun god, and another to Tlaloc, the rain god. The centrepiece of the museum is the Coyolxauhqui disc, a carved stone about 3.2 metres in diameter showing the dismembered moon goddess at the foot of the temple's stairway.
أفضل وقت في اليوم: 09:00-11:00. On a weekday, before school and tour groups fill the raised walkways.

تاريخ Templo Mayor and Museo del Templo Mayor
Templo Mayor was the ceremonial centre of Tenochtitlan, traditionally founded in 1325 on an island in Lake Texcoco. The temple was rebuilt and enlarged in at least seven construction phases as successive rulers added layers over the earlier structure. Hernán Cortés and his indigenous allies razed the city in 1521, and Spanish builders reused its stone for colonial churches and palaces, which is why much of the site lay buried beneath the historic centre for four centuries.
Templo Mayor came back into view in February 1978, when electricity workers digging near the corner of Guatemala and Argentina streets uncovered the Coyolxauhqui disc. The discovery triggered a rescue excavation led by archaeologist Eduardo Matos Moctezuma, and the government demolished colonial-era buildings to expose the temple base. The site museum opened in 1987, and later excavations nearby have exposed further ritual structures, including a tower of skulls known as the Huei Tzompantli discovered in 2015.
Interpretations of the temple's symbolism draw on Spanish colonial chroniclers and archaeological evidence, and some details remain debated among specialists.
القواعد والآداب في Templo Mayor and Museo del Templo Mayor
Templo Mayor's ruins are an open-air archaeological zone, so visitors follow the marked walkways and never step onto the ancient platforms or touch the stonework. Backpacks and large bags may need to be left at the entrance, and food, drink and drones are not permitted; personal photography is allowed, professional cameras require an additional fee, and tripod rules should be confirmed at the entrance.
Museo del Templo Mayor's galleries follow standard INAH rules: no flash, no touching the display cases, and quiet in the offering halls. Wear shoes with grip, since the walkways over the ruins can be slick after rain and the ground level sits below the modern street, with several stair sections and limited step-free routes. Guided tours in Spanish and English can be arranged through the museum.
نصائح لزيارة Templo Mayor and Museo del Templo Mayor
- 1
Templo Mayor works best in this order: walk the ruins first on the raised walkways for the layout of the temple and its ritual platforms, then go into the museum for the offerings and the Coyolxauhqui disc, which makes more sense once the temple's geometry is fresh. Allow at least two hours, and note that ticket queues at the entrance are shortest on weekday mornings.
- 2
Templo Mayor's ruins sit at the back of the cathedral block, so the entrance is on Seminario street, not on the Zócalo itself. Street sellers near the entrance offer souvenir replicas and "guides" who approach visitors unprompted; hire a licensed guide through the museum or skip them. Combine Templo Mayor with the Diego Rivera murals in the National Palace and the cathedral, all within a 10-minute walk.
