Places to Visit in Gujarat

Gujarat occupies the western flank of the Indian subcontinent with a coastline stretching over 1,600 kilometres — longer than any other Indian state — and an interior that shifts from the otherworldly white expanse of the Rann of Kutch to the teak-forested foothills of the Gir. It is not a state that performs for tourists. Its pleasures are earned: the pre-dawn light on a carved stepwell, the smell of fenugreek and asafoetida drifting through the lanes of an old Ahmedabad pol, the silence of a dhow harbour at low tide.

The state's identity was forged by trade. For two millennia, Gujarati merchants carried cotton, indigo, and spices across the Arabian Sea to Zanzibar, Aden, and Hormuz. That commercial instinct shaped everything — the intricacy of bandhani tie-dye that fetched premiums in Cairo, the carved havelis of Bhuj whose teak screens were status symbols before they were art, the patron-funded stepwells that were simultaneously civic infrastructure and architectural statements.

Modern Gujarat is the result of the state's bifurcation from the former Bombay State in 1960. Gandhinagar, a planned capital built on the model of Chandigarh, sits 30 kilometres north of Ahmedabad. The state's manufacturing corridors — Surat's diamond-cutting workshops, Vadodara's chemical plants, Rajkot's engineering clusters — coexist with an extraordinary density of protected monuments. The Archaeological Survey of India maintains more than 200 protected sites within its borders.

Visitors arriving for architecture will find a coherent tradition running from the 11th-century Solanki temples of Modhera and Patan through the Indo-Islamic stepwells of the Sultanate period to the Sultanate mosques and pols of Ahmedabad's UNESCO-listed walled city. The food, strictly vegetarian in most of the state's interior, is among India's most complex: the sweet-sour-hot layering of a thali at a Surati bhojanalaya is an education in itself.

October through February is the operative window. Monsoon runs June to September and renders some roads, particularly in Kutch, impassable.
