عن Zócalo and Metropolitan Cathedral
Metropolitan Cathedral in Mexico City charges no admission as of 2026 and fills the north side of the Zócalo, a paved square roughly 240 metres on each side. Construction ran from 1573 to about 1813, more than two centuries, which is why the grey chiluca-stone facade mixes Baroque, Churrigueresque and Neoclassical elements in one elevation. The two bell towers rise roughly 67 metres, and the interior holds side chapels along the naves and the gilded Altar of the Kings, a Churrigueresque retable carved in the early 18th century. Zócalo, officially Plaza de la Constitución, is the city's civic stage for concerts, protests, ice rinks and state ceremonies. The National Palace fills the east side, the city government buildings the south, and arcaded portals with hotel rooftop terraces the west, so the cathedral reads as one wall of a closed civic rectangle rather than a standalone monument.
أفضل وقت في اليوم: 08:00-10:00. On a weekday, before tour groups arrive and while the square is still cool.

تاريخ Zócalo and Metropolitan Cathedral
Metropolitan Cathedral stands on ground that once held the sacred precinct of Tenochtitlan, the Mexica capital taken by Hernán Cortés and his indigenous allies in August 1521. Stone from the demolished Aztec temples went into the first Spanish church here, and the present building was begun in 1573 under architect Claudio de Arciniega. Work continued through the 17th and 18th centuries, and Manuel Tolsá completed the clock tower and the upper stages of the towers and dome in the early 1800s.
Metropolitan Cathedral rests on the soft clay of drained Lake Texcoco and has sunk unevenly for centuries; plumb lines hung inside show the lean of the nave. Engineers stabilised the foundations in the 1990s by extracting soil beneath the sinking sections, and the structure is still monitored. A fire in 1967 destroyed part of the Altar of Forgiveness, and the September 2017 earthquake damaged sections of the fabric.
Zócalo takes its name from the Spanish word for plinth: in 1843 President Antonio López de Santa Anna ordered a monument to Independence and only the base was built, so the word stuck to the entire square.
القواعد والآداب في Zócalo and Metropolitan Cathedral
Metropolitan Cathedral operates as an active archdiocesan seat with masses through the day, so visitors keep voices low, remove hats and avoid crossing the nave during the Eucharist. Modest dress with covered shoulders and knees is the customary standard, although a formal dress code could not be confirmed from an official source. Guards inspect bags at the door, and large backpacks may be refused.
Zócalo has its own friction. Concheros dancers in feathered headdresses offer copal-smoke cleansing rituals and ask for a donation afterwards; a polite "no, gracias" ends the exchange, and photographing a dancer usually invites a tip request. Pickpockets work the crowd during events, and protest camps, concerts or state ceremonies can fence off part of the square with little notice.

- 1
Zócalo/Tenochtitlan Metro station on Line 2 exits onto the square, and Metropolitan Cathedral is quietest between 08:00 and 10:00 on weekdays. Look for the plumb lines near the central nave and the Altar of the Kings before circling the side chapels. Guided visits to the bell towers, roofs and pre-Hispanic foundations are run by the cathedral's cultural office; as of 2026, verify times and prices at the entrance.

Zócalo restaurants and rooftop terraces on the square's edge charge a premium for the view, and touts at street level steer visitors towards them; the side streets 5 de Mayo and Madero, a few minutes' walk west, offer cheaper meals. Metropolitan Cathedral pairs naturally with the Templo Mayor ruins a two-minute walk behind it and with the Diego Rivera murals in the National Palace across the square.
