Puducherry town is built on a division that still governs how visitors move through it. A canal — dry for most of the year, carrying monsoon runoff the rest — separates Ville Blanche (White Town), the French administrative quarter laid out in a rectilinear grid facing the Bay of Bengal, from Ville Noire (Tamil Town), the denser commercial quarter to its west where the majority of the resident population has always lived. The distinction was never merely descriptive: French colonial administration formalised it as a zoning boundary, and the street-naming pattern still reflects it, with White Town's Rue Suffren, Rue Dumas, and Rue Romain Rolland retaining French names alongside their post-1954 Tamil equivalents, while Tamil Town's Mission Street, Jawaharlal Nehru Street, and MG Road carry no French residue at all. The town's colonial-era buildings — government house (Raj Nivas), the old French Consulate, the Lycée Français, a working Catholic cathedral dating to 1791 — sit within walking distance of the Bay of Bengal seafront on Goubert Avenue, itself closed to vehicular traffic every evening. Twelve kilometres north, Auroville extends the town's utopian streak into a full experimental township founded in 1968; a similar distance south, the Sri Aurobindo Ashram anchors a spiritual-tourism economy that predates Auroville by four decades. Paradise Beach and the Chunnambar backwaters, both boat-access only, sit along the Union Territory's southern edge. October through February delivers the operational window: the worst of the humidity has broken, the northeast monsoon (October–December) is mostly a late-afternoon event rather than an all-day washout, and daytime temperatures hold in the high 20s to low 30s Celsius. April through June is punishing coastal heat with negligible sea breeze relief before noon.
