Über Guindy National Park

Guindy National Park covers only about 2.7 square kilometres, making it one of the smallest national parks in India and unusual for sitting entirely within a major city's built-up limits, wedged between Sardar Patel Road and the Chennai racecourse. The terrain is tropical dry evergreen scrub forest, low thorny cover rather than tall canopy jungle, threaded by sandy paths that stay dusty through most of the dry season. Roughly 400 blackbuck antelope and 2,000 spotted deer move through the scrub in view of visitors walking the perimeter trail, alongside jackals, civets, and pangolins that are far harder to spot during daylight hours.

The land began as Guindy Lodge, a hunting estate built in the early 1670s under East India Company Governor William Langhorne, later absorbed into the Governor's official residence grounds at Raj Bhavan. The Government of Madras purchased the surrounding forest tract outright in 1821, and it was formally notified as a Reserve Forest in 1910, protecting it from the urban development that had by then consumed most of the land around it. Guindy was declared a national park in 1978, a comparatively late designation that reflects how the site functioned first as a private hunting ground and only afterward as a conservation area in the modern legal sense. Its survival as undeveloped scrub inside one of India's largest cities owes more to its historical status as Raj Bhavan's buffer estate than to any early conservation planning.
