Narasimhavarman I, the king remembered by his title Mamalla, or 'great wrestler', commissioned most of the site's rock-cut caves and monolithic rathas in the mid-seventh century, while his successor Narasimhavarman II added the free-standing Shore Temple a generation later — the shift from carving into solid rock to building with quarried blocks is visible by walking the site in that order. European sailors who passed the coast in later centuries reported a row of ornate temples along the shoreline, a legend that gave the town its old nickname, the Seven Pagodas, and that the 2004 tsunami partly corroborated by exposing submerged stonework offshore.
