Mansa Devi Temple sits atop Bilwa Parvat, one of the Shivalik hills ringing Haridwar, and forms one stop on the city's Panch Tirth (five pilgrimage) circuit along with Chandi Devi and Maya Devi. The name comes from the Sanskrit 'mansa' (wish), and the temple's core ritual — tying a red or yellow thread to the branches of the sacred tree in the courtyard, then returning to untie it once the wish is granted — is what distinguishes Mansa Devi from Haridwar's other hilltop shrines. The sanctum holds two representations of the goddess side by side: one image with three heads and five arms, the other with eight arms, a dual-idol arrangement that local priests explain as depicting both the goddess's fierce and benevolent aspects. The hill is reached by the Mansa Devi Udankhatola, a cable ropeway spanning 540 metres horizontally and climbing 178 metres in altitude, or by a stone stepped path that most pilgrims skip in favour of the eight-minute cable car ride.
