Geschichte von Frida Kahlo Museum (Casa Azul)

Casa Azul was built in 1904 by Guillermo Kahlo, a German-born photographer and Frida's father, and Frida was born there on 6 July 1907. She lived in the house for much of her life, married the muralist Diego Rivera in 1929, and the couple lived at Casa Azul in later years, with Rivera adding the garden pyramid for his pre-Hispanic collection.

Casa Azul hosted Leon Trotsky and his wife from January 1937 to April 1939 after the exiled revolutionary was granted asylum in Mexico, and the house became a hub for artists and political exiles. Kahlo died in the house on 13 July 1954, and Rivera donated the property to the Mexican people, with the museum opening in 1958. Her ashes rest in a pre-Hispanic-style urn in the house.

Casa Azul's collection includes Kahlo paintings, letters, and a large display of Mexican folk art assembled by the couple, and the displays have been reorganised over the years as new material was added.

Regeln & Etikette in Frida Kahlo Museum (Casa Azul)

Casa Azul enforces timed entry: arriving well after the 15-minute slot window may mean refusal, and tickets are tied to a specific date and time. Museum staff check tickets at the gate and manage flow through the narrow rooms, so expect to shuffle. Phone photography without flash is included in the ticket, while professional cameras, tripods and selfie sticks are generally not permitted; confirm current rules on the official ticket page.

Casa Azul may restrict large backpacks and bags, so check the bag rules on the official ticket page before travelling. Touching artworks, furniture or walls is forbidden, and food and drink are not allowed in the rooms. Wear comfortable shoes for the uneven stone floors and keep voices low, as the rooms are small and sound carries.

Tipps für den Besuch von Frida Kahlo Museum (Casa Azul)

  1. 1

Casa Azul sells out, so book on the official ticket site as soon as dates are set; weekends and the Thursday evening slots vanish first. Buy only from boletos.museofridakahlo.org.mx, since resellers and street sellers around Coyoacán charge inflated prices and cannot guarantee entry. Arrive 15 minutes before the slot to clear the queue and bag check.

  2. 2

Casa Azul sits about 1 kilometre from Coyoacán's main plaza, so combine it with a wander through Jardín Centenario and the Mercado de Coyoacán for lunch. The Leon Trotsky House Museum is about 1.5 kilometres away on Río Churubusco, and the Anahuacalli museum, built by Rivera for his pre-Hispanic collection, is a short ride south. Weekday mornings are calmest, and the garden is best at the first slot, before tour groups arrive.
