Über National Museum of Anthropology (Museo Nacional de Antropología)

National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City charges MXN 210 for foreign adults as of 2026 and holds the largest collection of pre-Hispanic archaeology in the country, arranged around a central courtyard in Chapultepec Park. Architect Pedro Ramírez Vázquez designed the museum, which opened in 1964, and its courtyard is dominated by a vast concrete-and-bronze fountain in the shape of an umbrella, carried on a single central column. National Museum of Anthropology devotes its ground floor to archaeology, with roughly two dozen halls arranged by culture: Teotihuacan, Toltec, Mexica, Oaxaca, Gulf Coast and Maya. The upper floor covers the living Indigenous peoples of Mexico through ethnography.

Beste Tageszeit: 09:00-11:00. On a weekday, ideally starting with the Mexica hall before school groups arrive.

Geschichte von National Museum of Anthropology (Museo Nacional de Antropología)

National Museum of Anthropology opened on 17 September 1964, commissioned under President Adolfo López Mateos and built in around 19 months, with Pedro Ramírez Vázquez as chief architect alongside Rafael Mijares and Jorge Campos. The museum replaced an earlier national museum near the Zócalo whose collection had outgrown the space, and its design links each hall to a courtyard so visitors can circulate between cultures under open sky.

National Museum of Anthropology houses the Sun Stone, a basalt monolith about 3.6 metres across, uncovered in 1790 in the Zócalo during paving work and often called the Aztec calendar although that label is debated. The Mexica hall also displays sacrificial stones and carved deities, while the Oaxaca and Maya halls contain jade, pottery and a full-scale replica of the tomb of Pakal from Palenque.

National Museum of Anthropology sits in Chapultepec Park, a Mexica sacred site, and undergoes periodic hall-by-hall renovation, so specific rooms may be closed on any visit.

Regeln & Etikette in National Museum of Anthropology (Museo Nacional de Antropología)

National Museum of Anthropology allows personal, non-commercial photography, but flash, tripods and studio lights are not permitted, and video cameras need a permit from the ticket desk. Large backpacks are not permitted inside, and a free cloakroom is available from 09:00 to 17:00. Food and drink are not allowed in the halls, and the museum asks visitors to keep voices low and not to touch the displays.

National Museum of Anthropology gets heavy school traffic on weekday mornings and very heavy family traffic on free Sundays, so the corridors near the Mexica hall can become slow. Guided tours are available in several languages, and hiring an official guide at the entrance is safer than accepting offers from unlicensed touts in the courtyard. Wear comfortable shoes: the hall circuit covers several kilometres.

Tipps für den Besuch von National Museum of Anthropology (Museo Nacional de Antropología)

  1. 1

National Museum of Anthropology is too large for a single visit, so choose three or four halls in advance; the Mexica hall, Teotihuacan, Oaxaca and Maya together fill most of a morning. Begin with the Mexica hall, the museum's most crowded room, and finish upstairs with the ethnography floor if energy allows.

  2. 2

Museum of Anthropology visits pair naturally with Chapultepec Castle and the park, but at an altitude of 2,240 metres the combined walk is tiring. A cafeteria inside serves basic food at museum prices, while Polanco's restaurants are a short walk away. Buy tickets on arrival, take an audio guide if offered, and avoid Sundays if crowds bother you: the free entry draws long queues and packed halls.
