Über Istanbul
The historic core sits on a peninsula bounded by the Sea of Marmara, the Golden Horn inlet, and the old Theodosian land walls, and it is this peninsula — the Fatih district — that holds nearly every site on a first visit: Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace, the Basilica Cistern, and the Grand and Spice Bazaars all sit within a roughly 2-kilometre walk of one another around Sultanahmet Square. The city served as capital of the Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman empires in succession across more than 1,600 years, and each layer is still physically legible: Roman cisterns underground, Byzantine church mosaics behind Ottoman minbar screens, Ottoman palaces facing 19th-century European-style waterfront residences.
Public transport runs on the Istanbulkart, a single tap card valid across trams, the Metro, funiculars, buses, and Şehir Hatları ferries; the T1 tram line connects the airport-bound Metro to Sultanahmet and on to the Galata Bridge, making most flagship sites reachable without a car. Traffic congestion is severe at rush hour, and taxis are the least reliable option for crossing the historic peninsula compared to tram or foot. April–May and September–October bring the most comfortable sightseeing weather and avoid both the July–August tourist peak and winter rain; Ramadan dates shift each year and affect mosque visiting hours and restaurant service during daylight, so travellers should check the Islamic calendar against their travel dates. The lira's ongoing volatility means every price below should be treated as a snapshot rather than a fixed figure.
