Über Statue of Liberty & Ellis Island

The Statue of Liberty stands 93 metres from ground to torch tip on Liberty Island in New York Harbor, a copper-sheathed monument gifted by France and dedicated on October 28, 1886. The copper skin, just 2.4 millimetres thick, was hammered over a wrought-iron and steel armature engineered by Gustave Eiffel, whose skeletal framework allows the thin outer shell to sway several centimetres in high wind without stress fracture. The statue's original brown-copper surface oxidized to its present pale green patina by around 1906, a chemical process that stopped once the copper carbonate layer sealed the metal beneath it. Ellis Island, roughly 800 metres northwest across the harbor, processed an estimated 12 million immigrants between 1892 and 1954. The restored Main Building now houses the Ellis Island National Museum of Immigration, its vaulted, Guastavino-tiled Registry Room intact from the building's 1900 reconstruction after a fire destroyed the original wooden structure.

Beste Tageszeit: First ferry of the day. Typically 08:30. Crowds and security-line waits build steadily through midday and the first departure gives the shortest lines at both islands' security screening.

Geschichte von Statue of Liberty & Ellis Island

France proposed the statue as a Franco-American friendship monument tied to the centennial of American independence, with sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi designing the figure and Gustave Eiffel engineering its internal support structure between 1875 and 1884. Funding split the project in two: France covered the statue itself through public subscription, while the United States was responsible for the pedestal, designed by architect Richard Morris Hunt. American fundraising stalled until publisher Joseph Pulitzer, through his newspaper the New York World, ran a public campaign in 1885 that raised the remaining pedestal funds from more than 120,000 small donors.

Ellis Island opened as a federal immigration station on January 1, 1892, replacing the state-run Castle Garden facility, and operated as the primary East Coast entry point during the peak immigration decades of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The station closed in 1954 as immigration processing moved to consular offices abroad, and the buildings sat derelict for nearly three decades before a $160 million restoration reopened the Main Building as a museum in 1990. Both sites were placed under National Park Service administration, and the statue was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984.

Regeln & Etikette in Statue of Liberty & Ellis Island

Airport-style security screening is mandatory at both the Battery Park embarkation point and again on Liberty Island before pedestal or crown access; bags larger than a small backpack are not permitted inside the pedestal and there is no bag storage on the island itself, so pack light. Crown access requires climbing 162 additional narrow spiral steps inside the statue after the pedestal, is not wheelchair accessible, and has no elevator alternative.

Drones are prohibited over both islands under NPS and FAA restricted-airspace rules. Tripods and monopods are allowed in most outdoor areas but not inside the pedestal museum or Ellis Island's Registry Room during busy periods, at ranger discretion. Audio guides are included with every ferry ticket and are worth collecting at the dock kiosk rather than downloading the app, since cellular signal on Liberty Island is unreliable.

Tipps für den Besuch von Statue of Liberty & Ellis Island

  1. 1

Book Crown Reserve tickets three to four months ahead for summer dates; they routinely sell out that far in advance and are capped at a few hundred visitors per day for safety reasons tied to the narrow interior staircase. Travellers who cannot get Crown access should still book Pedestal Reserve, which reaches the observation deck at the statue's base and gives close-up views of Bartholdi's copper plating and Eiffel's iron truss through glass panels.

  2. 2

The ferry itself is the best vantage point for photographing the full statue with the Manhattan skyline behind it; the island's own sightlines are too close for a full-figure shot without a wide-angle lens. Allow a minimum of four hours total for both islands including ferry transit and security queues - rushing risks missing the last return sailing, after which no alternative transport exists off Liberty or Ellis Island.

  3. 3

Ellis Island's American Family Immigration History Center lets visitors search digitized ship manifests for ancestors who passed through the station; the terminals are free to use with a ferry ticket and searches by surname take only a few minutes.

Häufige Fragen zu Statue of Liberty & Ellis Island

Do you need a separate ticket for the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island?

No. One Statue City Cruises ferry ticket covers round-trip transport to both islands, their museums, and the audio tour. Crown or pedestal access requires selecting that ticket tier at booking, as of 2026.

How far in advance should you book Crown access?

Three to four months ahead for summer visits. Crown tickets are capped daily for safety on the narrow interior staircase and routinely sell out that far in advance; Pedestal Reserve tickets sell out less quickly but should still be booked at least several weeks ahead.

Is the Statue of Liberty crown wheelchair accessible?

No. The crown is reached only by 162 narrow spiral stairs with no elevator alternative. The pedestal observation deck and both islands' ground-floor museums are wheelchair accessible via elevator.

Can you bring bags onto Liberty Island?

Small bags are permitted, but there is no bag storage or checkroom on Liberty Island, and large bags or backpacks are barred from pedestal access entirely. Pack light and expect a second airport-style security screening on the island itself.
