France spans temperate oceanic climate in the north and west to Mediterranean conditions along the southern coast, with the Alps and Pyrenees forming natural borders to the east and south. Paris anchors the north-central Île-de-France region on the Seine, while the TGV high-speed rail network puts Lyon, Marseille, Bordeaux, and Strasbourg within 2-4 hours of the capital, making single-city and multi-region itineraries equally practical. Spring (April-June) and early autumn (September-October) bring the most reliable weather and thinner crowds at major sites; July-August is peak season with the highest prices and heaviest queues, while much of the country's own workforce takes its holiday in August, closing some smaller family-run restaurants. Winter is mild in the south and along the coast but genuinely cold in the north and mountainous east.

Many other nationalities (US, UK, Canada, Australia, Japan) can enter visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period under the Schengen short-stay rule; ETIAS pre-travel authorisation is expected to apply to visa-exempt visitors once phased in. Other nationalities require a Schengen visa.
