Twelve kilometres north, Auroville extends the town's utopian streak into a full experimental township founded in 1968; a similar distance south, the Sri Aurobindo Ashram anchors a spiritual-tourism economy that predates Auroville by four decades. Paradise Beach and the Chunnambar backwaters, both boat-access only, sit along the Union Territory's southern edge. October through February delivers the operational window: the worst of the humidity has broken, the northeast monsoon (October–December) is mostly a late-afternoon event rather than an all-day washout, and daytime temperatures hold in the high 20s to low 30s Celsius. April through June is punishing coastal heat with negligible sea breeze relief before noon.
