Italy runs the length of a mountainous peninsula plus Sicily and Sardinia, giving it a Mediterranean climate along most coasts and genuinely alpine conditions in the north around Milan and the Dolomites. Rome, Florence, and Venice form the classic first-time itinerary, connected by a fast rail network (Frecciarossa/Italo) that makes city-to-city travel simpler than driving through historic centres that ban private vehicles outright. April-June and September-October offer the best balance of weather and crowd levels; July-August brings intense heat, especially inland, and many smaller Italian-run businesses close for August holidays even in tourist areas. Venice's acqua alta (high water) flooding season runs roughly October-January and can affect access to low-lying areas like Piazza San Marco.
