Histoire de Alte Pinakothek

Alte Pinakothek was built for King Ludwig I between 1826 and 1836 to designs by Leo von Klenze, and it opened in 1836 to house the Wittelsbach family's paintings for public viewing. The building was intended as a museum from the start.

Alte Pinakothek was heavily damaged in the Second World War, and reconstruction under the architect Hans Döllgast in the 1950s used salvaged brick and left visible repairs rather than rebuilding the lost ornament. The museum reopened in 1957.

Alte Pinakothek's highlights include Dürer's Self-Portrait of 1500, Rubens's Great Last Judgement, and Leonardo's Madonna of the Carnation. The museum sits beside the Neue Pinakothek and the Pinakothek der Moderne in the Kunstareal, and each is a separate museum with its own ticket.

Règles et étiquette à Alte Pinakothek

Alte Pinakothek allows bags up to DIN A4 size (30 x 20 x 10 cm); larger bags, rucksacks and coats go into the cloakroom or lockers, and the cloakroom charges EUR 1 per person. Coats and umbrellas are stored at the entrance, so plan a minute or two at the counter.

Alte Pinakothek expects visitors to keep a distance from paintings, not to touch frames, and to speak quietly. Photography rules are posted on entry; flash is not allowed, and tripods generally are not. Large group tours use headphones or set times, so avoid blocking the doorways between rooms.

Alte Pinakothek has a cafe on site open 10:00 - 17:30 (until 19:00 on Tuesday and Wednesday). Tipping is optional and modest.

Conseils pour visiter Alte Pinakothek

  1. 1

Alte Pinakothek on Sunday costs only EUR 1, but the popular rooms with Dürer and Rubens are crowded; for a calmer visit choose Tuesday or Wednesday evening, when the museum stays open until 20:00, or a weekday morning.

  2. 2

Alte Pinakothek is too large to see in full in one visit; pick two or three schools, such as the early German masters, Dutch and Flemish paintings, or the Italian rooms. An audio guide, where offered at the desk, helps to focus the route. Plan about two and a half hours, and stop at the cafe halfway rather than pushing through.

  3. 3

Alte Pinakothek is a short tram or U-Bahn ride from the centre and is close to the Königsplatz and the Pinakothek der Moderne. A weekday visit paired with a walk around the Kunstareal makes a good half-day, and four lifts serve all exhibition areas, with wheelchairs available on request. Check the official site for any galleries closed or rehung on the day.
