À propos de Olympiapark München

Olympiapark München is free to enter and was built for the 1972 Summer Olympics on the Oberwiesenfeld, a former airfield in the north of the city, as of 2026. Its landscape of a lake, hills and a translucent tent roof over the stadium and arenas was designed to look nothing like the monumental architecture of the 1936 Berlin Games. Olympiapark's Olympic Tower is closed for renovation, with the official site expecting reopening in October 2027, so a visit in 2026 centres on the park, the tent roof structure and the tours.

Meilleur moment de la journée : Weekday mornings. Or late afternoon for the light on the tent roof and Olympic Lake; event days at the stadium and Olympiahalle bring crowds and diversions.

Histoire de Olympiapark München

Olympiapark was designed by Behnisch & Partner with the tent-roof structure engineered with Frei Otto, whose lightweight acrylic-glass canopy over the stadium became the games' signature. The park's Olympic Hill was raised from Second World War rubble, and the site combines sports venues, lake and gardens.

Olympiapark was also the site of the 5 September 1972 attack on the Israeli team at the Olympic Village, in which eleven Israeli athletes and coaches and a West German police officer were killed. A memorial site for the attack, opened in 2017, stands in the park and is free to visit.

Olympiapark remains an active venue: the Olympic Stadium, Olympiahalle and other arenas host concerts and sport, and the residential Olympic Village, built for the athletes, is still lived in. The Olympic Tower, about 290 metres high, has been closed since 1 June 2024 for extensive renovation.

Règles et étiquette à Olympiapark München

Olympiapark is a public park, and walking, cycling and picnicking are permitted, but event days at the stadium and arenas bring temporary closures and diversions for cyclists; check the official site's calendar before visiting. Access to specific venues depends on events and renovation.

Olympiapark's 1972 memorial site deserves a quiet, respectful visit; photography of the memorial is allowed but avoid loud behaviour. Guided tours run on fixed schedules and must be booked; the tent-roof climb is currently suspended during the stadium renovation.

Olympiapark has restaurants and kiosks with park prices; bring water in summer, since shade is limited on the open meadows. Dogs should be leashed, and cyclists should follow marked paths. Tipping in Munich is optional; round up the bill.

Conseils pour visiter Olympiapark München

  1. 1

Olympiapark needs a plan in 2026: the tower and stadium interior are not available as usual, so use the Waldi Tour or Architec Tour (EUR 20 adult, EUR 15 pupil or student) for the park's engineering and history, or simply walk the paths and lake.

  2. 2

Olympiapark pairs well with BMW Welt, a short walk away, which is free to enter and shows current BMW models; the BMW Museum next door charges an entry fee whose price sources disagree on, so verify at the official site.

  3. 3

Olympiapark's Olympic Hill is a free climb for a wide view of the tent roof and the city, and it is a favourite for sunset. Reach the park by U3 to Olympiazentrum; on concert or match days trains are crowded, so allow extra time or use the tram or bus alternatives.
