Alappuzha Lighthouse has warned ships off Kerala's low-lying coast since 28 March 1862, when its original optic from the Birmingham lamp-makers Chance Brothers was commissioned into service inside a 28-metre masonry tower whose lamp sits at a focal height of 33 metres above sea level. The tower predates several better-known lights on the Malabar coast and remains one of the oldest working lighthouses in the region still open to the public, its beam visible up to 24.5 nautical miles out to sea on a clear night. Visitors climb a teak spiral staircase original to the 1862 construction to reach the gallery balcony, from which Vembanad Lake's edge is visible roughly 5 kilometres inland, alongside the beach, pier, and fishing harbour directly below.

Histoire de Alappuzha Lighthouse

Construction began under the reign of Marthanda Varma II of Travancore, and Mrs Mary Anne Crawford laid the first stone on 26 April 1860, a detail preserved on a foundation plaque inside the tower. The lighthouse was completed under Marthanda Varma's successor, Rama Varma Maharaja, and commissioned into service on 28 March 1862 with an optic supplied by Chance Brothers of Birmingham, whose lenses lit dozens of British Empire lighthouses from Sri Lanka to South Africa in the same era.
