Man Mandir Palace was built between 1486 and 1516 by the Tomar ruler Raja Man Singh, and its outer wall still carries bands of turquoise, green, and yellow glazed tile set into ochre sandstone in geometric and floral patterns — the reason locals call it the Painted Palace. The palace occupies the northeastern edge of the Gwalior Fort ridge, its facade dropping directly to the plain below so the tilework was visible from the city long before a visitor reached the gate. Two circular pavilions with domed roofs mark the corners of the entrance facade, and the sandstone jali screens on the upper storeys were cut to let hot air rise out of the rooms beneath — a passive cooling technique built into the stone rather than added to it.

Raja Man Singh Tomar commissioned Man Mandir Palace as the Tomar dynasty's primary residence within Gwalior Fort, and construction ran from 1486 until shortly before his death in 1516. Man Singh was a patron of music as much as architecture; court tradition credits his reign with cultivating the dhrupad vocal style that later fed into the Gwalior gharana, the city's classical music tradition.
