À propos de Casa Batlló

Casa Batlló was remodelled by Antoni Gaudí between 1904 and 1906 from an existing 1877 apartment building for textile industrialist Josep Batlló, who wanted a facade unlike anything else on Passeig de Gràcia. The result is a skeletal, undulating front clad in trencadís mosaic made from broken ceramic and glass discs in blues, greens, and golds that shift with the light through the day. The roof's arched, scaled ridge is widely read as a stylised dragon's back, with a turret topped by a cross interpreted as Saint George's lance — a legend the museum itself presents as popular interpretation rather than confirmed authorial intent. Inside, the Noble Floor's ceiling swirls around a central light well in a spiral resembling a whirlpool, and every straight structural line was deliberately avoided in favour of curved oak woodwork, sinuous cast-iron balcony railings resembling carnival masks, and undulating plaster. Gaudí engineered a light well faced in graduated blue tiles — darker at the top, paler toward the bottom — to distribute daylight evenly to every floor, an optical correction for a building that predates artificial lighting sufficient for interior use.

Meilleur moment de la journée : 09:00–10:00. For the quietest interior circulation, or after 19:00 in summer for cooler temperatures and evening light on the facade's trencadís tiles.

Histoire de Casa Batlló

Josep Batlló i Casanovas, a wealthy textile manufacturer, bought the existing 1877 building at Passeig de Gràcia 43 in 1903 and commissioned Gaudí in 1904 not to demolish it but to remodel it entirely, a more technically demanding brief than new construction since Gaudí had to work around an existing structural frame. The remodel was completed in 1906, in the same period Gaudí was also developing Park Güell and early plans for Sagrada Família, making Casa Batlló a distillation of his mature Modernisme style within a compressed timeline.

The building remained in the Batlló family and later passed through corporate ownership; the Bernat family, current owners through the Núñez i Navarro real estate group, opened it to the public as a museum in 2002, the year marking the 150th anniversary of Gaudí's birth. UNESCO added Casa Batlló to the "Works of Antoni Gaudí" World Heritage listing in 2005, alongside Park Güell, La Pedrera, and Sagrada Família's Nativity facade and crypt.

Règles et étiquette à Casa Batlló

Timed entry is enforced strictly at the door; arriving significantly early or late on a booked slot can mean waiting for the next available opening. Large suitcases and backpacks over cabin-bag size are not permitted inside and there is no dedicated cloakroom for oversized luggage, so travellers moving between hotels should visit before checking bags.

The augmented-reality tablet included with most ticket tiers requires holding the device up through several rooms; groups with young children sometimes find this cumbersome on the narrower stairwells. The Dragon's Rooftop terrace has a raised, uneven tiled surface and a step-heavy access route, which the museum flags as unsuitable for wheelchair users without assistance.

Conseils pour visiter Casa Batlló

  1. 1

Booking online in advance saves €4–€12 per ticket compared with walk-up pricing and is the only reliable way to secure a same-day slot in peak season, when Passeig de Gràcia queues without a booking can exceed an hour. Since January 2025 the Dragon's Rooftop has been excluded from the base Blue ticket, so travellers specifically wanting roof access should book at least the Silver tier rather than assuming it is included.

  2. 2

Casa Batlló sits on the same block as Casa Amatller and Casa Lleó Morera on what locals call the "Illa de la Discòrdia" (Block of Discord), three competing Modernisme facades built within a few years of each other — worth viewing together from across the street before entering any single building. Evening visits after 19:00 avoid the day's coach-tour volume and the mosaic facade photographs well under the building's own exterior lighting after dusk.
