À propos de Park Güell

Park Güell covers 17 hectares on Carmel Hill and was designed by Antoni Gaudí between 1900 and 1914 as a failed residential development before the city converted it into a public park in 1926. Industrialist Eusebi Güell commissioned Gaudí to build a garden city of 60 houses in the English style; only two show houses and the ornamental infrastructure were completed before the project collapsed commercially in 1914, undone by the site's distance from the city centre at the time. The trencadís mosaic technique covering the serpentine bench and the entrance pavilions' roofs was built from broken ceramic tile, glass, and ordinary crockery shards, a Gaudí signature developed partly for economy and partly for texture. The hypostyle hall beneath the main terrace uses 86 Doric-style columns, some tilted to carry structural load, to support the plaza above while doubling as a covered market space in Gaudí's original brief. Rainwater is channelled through the columns' hollow cores into a cistern beneath the hall, an engineering detail visitors rarely notice beneath the more photographed mosaic work above.

Meilleur moment de la journée : 09:30 opening slot. Before the terrace and mosaic bench fill with tour groups and before midday heat on the exposed upper paths.

Histoire de Park Güell

Eusebi Güell, a textile magnate and Gaudí's principal patron, bought the Carmel Hill land in 1900 with the intention of building an elite residential estate modelled on the English garden-city movement, complete with a chapel, shared gardens, and infrastructure for 60 private villas. Gaudí designed the site's roads, viaducts, entrance pavilions, and central terrace between 1900 and 1914, but only two show houses sold; Gaudí himself moved into one in 1906, living there until shortly before his death in 1926, and the house is now the Gaudí House Museum.

The development's commercial failure reflected the site's poor connectivity to central Barcelona at the time — a problem the modern metro has since solved. Güell's heirs sold the estate to Barcelona City Council in 1922, and it opened as a public municipal park in 1926, the same year Gaudí died. UNESCO inscribed Park Güell as part of the "Works of Antoni Gaudí" World Heritage listing in 1984, among the earliest of his works to receive the designation.

Règles et étiquette à Park Güell

The Monumental Zone — the terrace, serpentine bench, entrance pavilions, and hypostyle hall — requires a timed ticket purchased online; the surrounding wooded park, viewpoints, and Gaudí House Museum sit outside this zone and are free to enter without a ticket. Visitors regularly arrive expecting the whole park to be free and are surprised at the Monumental Zone gate.

Drones are prohibited throughout the park without prior municipal authorisation. The paths climbing from Lesseps metro are steep and partly stepped, with no lift access; wheelchair users should approach from the Carretera del Carmel side, which has a gentler, ramped route. Picnicking and sitting on the trencadís mosaic bench for extended periods are discouraged by on-site staff during peak hours to keep visitor flow moving.

Conseils pour visiter Park Güell

  1. 1

Booking online at least a few days ahead is close to essential in high season, since same-day Monumental Zone slots frequently sell out by mid-morning. The 30-minute entry window is enforced at the gate, so arriving even 10 minutes late on a missed slot can mean re-booking.

  2. 2

The free upper paths above the Monumental Zone, particularly around the Turó de les Tres Creus viewpoint, give a wider panorama over the city and the sea than the ticketed terrace itself, and cost nothing. Bus 24 from Plaça Catalunya drops closer to the upper entrance than either metro option, avoiding the steepest climb — useful for visitors travelling with young children or limited mobility.

FAQ — Park Güell

Is all of Park Güell paid entry?

No. Only the Monumental Zone — the terrace, mosaic bench, entrance pavilions, and hypostyle hall — requires an €18 ticket as of 2026. The surrounding wooded park and viewpoints are free and open without a booking.

Do I need to book Park Güell tickets in advance?

Yes, strongly recommended. Entry to the Monumental Zone is sold in 30-minute timed slots that frequently sell out in high season, and booking through parkguell.barcelona a few days ahead avoids being turned away at the gate.

How do you get to Park Güell without a car?

The L3 metro to Lesseps or Vallcarca is the standard route, followed by a roughly 700-metre uphill walk. Bus 24 from Plaça Catalunya drops closer to the upper entrance and avoids the steepest climb, which suits visitors with mobility concerns.

Is Gaudí's house inside Park Güell open to visitors?

Yes. The Gaudí House Museum, where Gaudí lived from 1906 until shortly before his death, sits within the park grounds and is ticketed separately from the Monumental Zone, with a combined ticket option available online.
