À propos de Blue Mosque

The Blue Mosque takes its English nickname from more than 20,000 handmade İznik ceramic tiles lining its interior, predominantly blue and turquoise floral and geometric patterns produced in the İznik workshops at the height of Ottoman tile-making in the early 17th century. Architect Sedefkar Mehmed Ağa, a student of the empire's most celebrated architect Mimar Sinan, designed the mosque with six minarets — an unusual number that reportedly caused controversy at the time, since Mecca's Grand Mosque also had six, and a seventh minaret was said to have been added there to preserve its primacy, though the exact circumstances remain disputed among historians. The cascading dome sequence — a large central dome supported by four semi-domes, themselves each supported by smaller domes — was engineered in cut limestone and sits atop four massive fluted piers nicknamed 'elephant feet' locally for their bulk, each roughly 5 metres in diameter.

Meilleur moment de la journée : 09:00 – 10:30. After morning prayer clears and well ahead of the midday closure, or after 16:00 once tour-bus groups have thinned.

Histoire de Blue Mosque

Sultan Ahmed I commissioned the mosque in 1609, partly as a political and religious statement after the unfavourable 1606 Peace of Zsitvatorok with the Habsburgs left the empire without a major military victory to fund a mosque through war spoils, breaking with the tradition that imperial mosques were financed from conquest revenue. Construction ran from 1609 to 1616 under Sedefkar Mehmed Ağa's direction, and Ahmed I died the year after completion, at 27, and is buried in a mausoleum on the mosque grounds facing Sultanahmet Square.

The mosque was built directly facing Hagia Sophia across the former Hippodrome of Constantinople, a deliberate architectural rivalry: Ottoman builders had spent over 150 years trying to match Hagia Sophia's dome, and Sultan Ahmed Mosque's cascading dome system was the era's closest structural answer, even if its single dome span does not exceed Hagia Sophia's. The mosque has remained in continuous use for Muslim worship since its 1616 completion, one of the few major Istanbul mosques never converted to secular or museum use under the Ottoman or Republican eras.

Règles et étiquette à Blue Mosque

A strict dress code applies to every visitor regardless of religion: women must cover their hair with a headscarf, and all visitors must cover shoulders and knees; free scarves and wrap-around cover-ups are available at the entrance, though bringing a personal scarf avoids that queue. Shoes are removed before entering the carpeted prayer hall and carried in a plastic bag provided at the door — there is no staffed cloakroom.

Tourist entry is through a side door in the outer courtyard, not the monumental portal on the Hippodrome side, which is reserved for worshippers. Visitors are confined to a roped-off rear section of the prayer hall; walking onto the main carpeted floor beyond the barrier is not permitted outside worship. Photography without flash is generally allowed, but visitors should lower phones and stop moving during active prayer, which can begin with little warning as the muezzin's call is heard.

Conseils pour visiter Blue Mosque

  1. 1

Security screening resembling airport bag checks stands at the tourist entrance and can take up to an hour in July and August; arriving right at the 08:30 opening or immediately after a prayer session clears the queue fastest. Checking a prayer-time app or the mosque's posted schedule before setting out saves a wasted walk, since the doors close to visitors with little external signage beyond a rope barrier.

  2. 2

The mosque courtyard itself, with its arcaded portico and the Sultan Ahmed mausoleum garden, is worth 10 minutes even outside opening hours, since the exterior six-minaret silhouette against Sultanahmet Square is unobstructed from the park side at any time. Pairing the visit with Hagia Sophia directly across the square is standard; visiting both in the same prayer-free window, roughly 09:00–11:30, is the most efficient sequence.

FAQ — Blue Mosque

Is there an entrance fee for the Blue Mosque?

No. Entry to the Blue Mosque is free for all visitors as of 2026, since it operates as an active place of worship rather than a ticketed museum. An optional donation box sits near the visitor exit.

Why does the Blue Mosque have six minarets?

Six minarets was an unusual, near-unprecedented number for a mosque at the time of its 1616 completion, matching the count at Mecca's Grand Mosque. Historical accounts suggest this caused controversy and that a seventh minaret was added in Mecca afterward, though the precise sequence of events is disputed among historians and should be treated as a commonly repeated account rather than settled fact.

Can tourists visit the Blue Mosque during Friday prayers?

No. The mosque closes to non-worshipping visitors from the morning until roughly 14:30 on Fridays for the congregational Jumu'ah prayer, longer than the shorter daily prayer closures on other days. Checking the posted schedule or a prayer-time app before visiting on a Friday avoids a wasted trip.

What is the dress code for visiting the Blue Mosque?

Women must cover their hair with a headscarf, and all visitors must cover both shoulders and knees; long trousers or a below-knee skirt and a shoulder-covering top are required. Free scarves and cover-ups are handed out at the entrance for anyone arriving underdressed.
