St. John in the Wilderness Church stands among deodar trees at the edge of Mallital, one of Nainital's oldest surviving buildings and among the earliest Anglican churches built in the Kumaon hills. St. John in the Wilderness Church's construction between 1846 and 1848 coincided with Nainital's rapid transformation from an obscure lake discovered by the trader P. Barron in 1841 into an established British hill station with a resident colonial administration.
