KL Tower was built as a telecommunications tower, with construction finished in September 1994 and public opening on 23 July 1996, followed by a formal inauguration that October. The architect was Achmad Moerdijat and the main contractor was Hazama Corporation, the same Japanese firm that later built one of the Petronas Twin Towers.
