Über Thean Hou Temple
Thean Hou Temple was completed in 1987 and officially opened in 1989, a six-tiered Chinese temple on Robson Heights hill overlooking Kuala Lumpur. Its three altars honour Mazu (Tian Hou, the sea goddess), Guanyin and Shui Wei Sheng Niang, blending Buddhist, Taoist and Confucian traditions. Entry costs nothing, as of 2026, and visitors reach it by steep roads from Jalan Syed Putra. Red pillars, curved gilded roofs and rows of lanterns frame the terraces, and the temple draws around 80,000 visitors during Chinese New Year.
Beste Tageszeit: Late afternoon into early evening. When the red lanterns and gilded roofs light up and the heat has eased.

Geschichte von Thean Hou Temple
Thean Hou Temple was built by the Hainanese community, with construction beginning in 1981 at a cost of about RM7 million and completion in 1987, followed by an official opening in 1989. The temple's name means Temple of the Heavenly Queen, a title for Mazu, patron goddess of sailors and fishermen. The six-tiered complex mixes Buddhist, Taoist and Confucian elements, and its ornate roofs, carved pillars and painted beams follow southern Chinese temple design.
Thean Hou Temple stands on Robson Heights above Jalan Syed Putra, reached through steep residential roads, and it is counted among the larger Chinese temples in Southeast Asia. The prayer hall centres on Mazu with Guanyin on the right and Shui Wei Sheng Niang on the left. The grounds host goddess birthday celebrations, Wesak Day observances, Mid-Autumn Festival events and Chinese martial-arts classes, and the terraces give a wide view over the city.
Regeln & Etikette in Thean Hou Temple
Thean Hou Temple is a working place of worship, so visitors dress modestly with shoulders and knees covered, avoid loud talk in the prayer hall and step around worshippers offering joss sticks. Photography of buildings and lanterns is normal, but visitors should not photograph worshippers in prayer without asking.
Thean Hou Temple lets visitors light incense at the designated burners if they follow the local pattern, and donations go to the collection boxes rather than to individuals. Fortune-telling and souvenir stalls operate on the grounds, and prices should be agreed before a reading or purchase. Visitors should not touch offerings or point their feet at altars. The site is a place of worship first, so wait behind worshippers at the main altars. Tipping is not expected anywhere at the temple.
Tipps für den Besuch von Thean Hou Temple
- 1
Thean Hou Temple is best visited in late afternoon, when the heat eases and the lanterns and gilded roofs catch the light, and hours conflict between sources (08:00-20:00 against 08:00-22:00), so confirm the closing time before an evening trip. Entry is free, as of 2026, so budget only for transport and a donation.
- 2
Thean Hou Temple has no rail station at its gate, so most visitors take an e-hailing car or taxi from KL Sentral, around 10 to 20 minutes depending on traffic, and agree the return trip before leaving. Chinese New Year and the Mid-Autumn Festival bring the largest crowds and the best displays, and visitors should expect long queues and full car parks at those times. Wear shoes for stairs and steep paths, and bring water, since the terraces are open to the sun.
