Über Anne Frank House

The Anne Frank House charges €16.50 for adults, including a €1 booking fee, and sells tickets only online, as of 2026. The museum occupies Prinsengracht 263-267, where Anne Frank, her family and four others lived in the rear Secret Annex, or Achterhuis, from July 1942 until their arrest on 4 August 1944. Anne Frank House keeps the rooms bare, with the movable bookcase that hid the entrance and the pencil marks that recorded the children's heights on the wall, and the original diary is displayed under glass.

Beste Tageszeit: Evening slots after 18:00. When fewer tour groups pass through the narrow rooms.

Geschichte von Anne Frank House

Anne Frank House opened as a museum on 3 May 1960, after Otto Frank, the family's only survivor of the camps, established the Anne Frank Foundation in 1957 to save the building from demolition. The canal house had been the office and warehouse of Otto's company, Opekta, and the Annex behind it was hidden from the street by the front building.

The diary was published in Dutch in 1947 as Het Achterhuis, and it has since been translated into many languages. The museum joined three adjacent buildings on the street front and added a modern entrance building on Westermarkt. Visitor numbers reached 1.27 million in 2017, when it ranked third among Dutch museums after the Van Gogh Museum and the Rijksmuseum. The Westerkerk, with its 85-metre tower, stands a few steps away, and Anne mentions its bells in the diary.

Regeln & Etikette in Anne Frank House

Anne Frank House allows only bags smaller than an A4 sheet of paper inside, and larger items must be left at a hotel or at Amsterdam Centraal, since there is no cloakroom for oversized luggage. Staff check tickets and bags at the entrance building on Westermarkt, and lines form before the slot.

Photography and filming are not permitted anywhere in the museum, and the ban covers smart glasses, camera glasses and AI glasses. The route contains numerous steep stairs and very narrow openings, so the visit is difficult for people with limited mobility; see the accessibility page before booking. Visitors are expected to be silent in the Annex rooms, and the museum states a minimum age of 10. Audio guides run in nine languages.

Tipps für den Besuch von Anne Frank House

  1. 1

Anne Frank House releases tickets every Tuesday at 10:00 CEST for a visit six weeks later, so a July slot must be bought in late May. Slots disappear within minutes for peak days, and the museum states that tickets are not sold at the door. Resellers and guided tours sell separately, and scams that resell tickets at large markups circulate online, so buy from annefrank.org.

  2. 2

Anne Frank House visits last about an hour, plus the museum shop and cafe, which visitors reach after the tour. Pair the slot with the Westerkerk tower and the nearby Jordaan streets, and expect a queue of ticket holders on Prinsengracht before the slot time. Evening slots after 18:00 can feel calmer, though the museum sells them on the same six-week schedule as every other slot.
