Sobre Dubrovnik
As Ragusa, it was an independent maritime republic until 1808, trading between the Ottoman Empire and Venice, and the 1667 earthquake and the 1991-92 siege each left visible marks that were repaired in the same pale stone. The Old Town is pedestrian-only and compact: Stradun (Placa) runs about 300 metres between Pile Gate and Luža Square, with Onofrio's Fountain, Sponza Palace, the Rector's Palace and the Franciscan and Dominican monasteries all within a 10-minute walk of it.
Dubrovnik has become one of Europe's most visited small cities, and the city has responded with visitor controls, including a limit of two cruise ships a day, a target of about 8,000 cruise passengers daily and a comfort figure near 4,000 people in the Old Town at once under its Respect the City programme; sources differ on enforcement. Dubrovnik Airport (DBV) sits about 21 km south-east at Čilipi, with shuttle buses to Pile Gate; ferries and buses use Gruž harbour, about 3 km north-west of the Old Town, and there is no railway.
July and August are the hottest, most crowded and most expensive months. The best window is May to June and September to early October, when the sea is warm and crowds thinner; winter is quiet, with reduced hours at many sights and the cable car and Lokrum ferry on limited or no service. Walk the Walls at opening, and book the City Walls ticket online in season.
