Sobre Île-de-France
Île-de-France forms a roughly circular basin around Paris, drained by the Seine, Marne, and Oise rivers, with the city itself occupying the historic core inside the Boulevard Périphérique ring road. Beyond the capital, the region holds the former royal seats of Versailles and Fontainebleau, the cathedral town of Chartres just over its southwestern edge, and dense commuter belts served by the RER suburban rail network and the expanding Grand Paris Express metro. The terrain is flat to gently rolling farmland and forest — the Forêt de Fontainebleau and Forêt de Rambouillet are former royal hunting grounds now open for walking and climbing.
Climate is temperate oceanic: mild, damp winters rarely below freezing for long, and summers averaging 20-25°C with occasional heatwaves above 35°C in July-August. Spring (April-June) and early autumn (September-October) bring the clearest light and thinner queues at major sites; August empties out as Parisians leave on holiday, which means shorter lines at monuments but some family-run restaurants shuttered. Winter is workable for museum-heavy itineraries since major collections are indoor, though Versailles' gardens and fountain shows run on a reduced season outside April-October.
Rail is the organizing fact of travel here: Gare du Nord, Gare de l'Est, Gare de Lyon, Gare Montparnasse, and Gare Saint-Lazare connect Paris to the rest of France and to London, Brussels, and beyond, while RER lines A, B, and C reach Versailles, Disneyland Paris, and Charles de Gaulle Airport directly from the city centre.
