Alappuzha Lighthouse has warned ships off Kerala's low-lying coast since 28 March 1862, when its original optic from the Birmingham lamp-makers Chance Brothers was commissioned into service inside a 28-metre masonry tower whose lamp sits at a focal height of 33 metres above sea level. The tower predates several better-known lights on the Malabar coast and remains one of the oldest working lighthouses in the region still open to the public, its beam visible up to 24.5 nautical miles out to sea on a clear night. Historia de Alappuzha Lighthouse

Construction began under the reign of Marthanda Varma II of Travancore, and Mrs Mary Anne Crawford laid the first stone on 26 April 1860, a detail preserved on a foundation plaque inside the tower.
