Sobre Coyoacán (Plaza Hidalgo, Jardín Centenario and Mercado)

Coyoacán in southern Mexico City is free to walk as of 2026 and centres on the twin plazas Jardín Centenario and Plaza Hidalgo, laid out in front of the 16th-century parish church of San Juan Bautista. The name comes from Nahuatl and is commonly translated as "place of coyotes," and the coyote fountain in the Jardín Centenario recalls that origin. Coyoacán holds cobbled streets, low colonial houses in ochre and blue, and the covered Mercado de Coyoacán, where tostada stalls and fruit vendors serve a local lunch crowd. Frida Kahlo's Casa Azul, the Leon Trotsky House Museum and the Viveros tree nursery lie within walking distance.

Mejor momento del día: 10:00-12:00. On a weekday, before the market lunch rush and the weekend crowds.

Historia de Coyoacán (Plaza Hidalgo, Jardín Centenario and Mercado)

Coyoacán was an independent town south of Tenochtitlan when Hernán Cortés established his headquarters there after the fall of the Aztec capital in 1521, and local tradition ties the municipal palace on Plaza Hidalgo to his residence, although the present building is a later reconstruction. Dominican friars founded the convent and church of San Juan Bautista in the 1530s, and the town stayed a separate municipality until absorption into the Federal District in 1928.

Coyoacán became a refuge for artists and exiles in the 20th century. Frida Kahlo was born and died in the Casa Azul on Londres street, and Leon Trotsky lived in Coyoacán from 1939 until his assassination in August 1940; his house on Río Churubusco still shows the bullet holes from an earlier attack in May 1940. The area's leafy, low-rise character survived the growth of the megacity partly because of these institutions.

Normas y etiqueta en Coyoacán (Plaza Hidalgo, Jardín Centenario and Mercado)

Coyoacán's plazas are public and free to enter, but the church of San Juan Bautista follows normal church etiquette: covered shoulders, no flash and quiet during masses. Buskers, mariachi, balloon sellers and craft vendors work the plazas; a polite "no, gracias" is enough, and photographing performers usually invites a tip.

Coyoacán's market and street food are safe for most visitors if chosen sensibly: pick busy stalls with high turnover, avoid raw items if your stomach is sensitive, and carry small notes since many stalls take cash only. Pickpockets operate around the plazas and in the Metro at busy hours, especially on Saturdays and Sundays. Tipping 10-15% in sit-down restaurants is standard and rarely included in the bill.

Consejos para visitar Coyoacán (Plaza Hidalgo, Jardín Centenario and Mercado)

  1. 1

Coyoacán works best as a half-day on foot: start at Plaza Hidalgo, walk through the Jardín Centenario, then eat at the Mercado de Coyoacán before visiting the Casa Azul, about 1 kilometre away. Book the Casa Azul days or weeks ahead, since timed online tickets sell out.

  2. 2

Coyoacán is at its liveliest on Saturdays and Sundays, when families, craft stalls and musicians fill the plazas, and the queues at popular churro and ice-cream stands grow. For a quieter visit go on a weekday morning, or walk the shaded paths of the Viveros de Coyoacán, a large tree nursery park that is free and opens from 06:00. Choose the small streets behind the plazas for cafes with lower prices than those directly on Plaza Hidalgo.
