Sobre Rembrandt House Museum

The Rembrandt House Museum charges €23.50 for adults, or €19.50 for off-peak entry after 16:00, as of 2026. Rembrandt bought the brick house on Jodenbreestraat on 5 January 1639 for 13,000 guilders and lived and worked there until 1658, when bankruptcy forced a sale. The museum keeps an almost complete set of his etchings and some of the original copper plates. Rembrandt House rooms have been rebuilt from the inventory drawn up in 1656 for his creditors, so visitors see the studio, the print room and the cabinet of curiosities where he collected shells, weapons and classical busts.

Mejor momento del día: The 16:00-18:00 off-peak slot. In summer, or the first slot at 10:00.

Historia de Rembrandt House Museum

The Rembrandt House Museum stands in what was Amsterdam's Jewish quarter, and the house was built around 1606 and renovated about 1627. Rembrandt paid 13,000 guilders in 1639, a large sum that he could not sustain after his fortunes fell, and the property was auctioned in 1658 for 11,000 guilders. The 1656 inventory listed the contents room by room, which later curators used as a script for the interior.

The city bought the decayed building in 1907, and architect Karel de Bazel restored it between 1907 and 1911. The museum opened on 10 June 1911. The house served as Rembrandt's home, studio and art dealership, and the ground-floor kitchen and the light of the first-floor studio remain the clearest way to picture his working day. A modern wing beside the house holds temporary exhibitions and the entrance.

Normas y etiqueta en Rembrandt House Museum

The Rembrandt House Museum sells timed tickets online and admits visitors through a small entrance building, so a booked slot avoids a queue on Jodenbreestraat. The multimedia tour is included in every ticket, and headsets are handed out at the desk, with a family version available.

Bag and photography rules were not stated in the sources found, so verify them at the official site or at the desk; the galleries are small and the print room is light-sensitive, so flash is unwise. The stairs are steep and narrow, as in any 17th-century canal house, and the museum warns that not every floor suits people with reduced mobility. Cafe and shop lie in the modern wing, and card payment is standard.

Consejos para visitar Rembrandt House Museum

  1. 1

Rembrandt House visitors should book the 16:00-18:00 off-peak slot in summer, since it saves €4 and finds the rooms quieter. Start in the ground-floor rooms, where the kitchen and the bedroom show household life, then go up to the studio and the print room, where etchings and original copper plates are shown.

  2. 2

Pair the house with the Waterlooplein flea market and the nearby Nieuwmarkt, a 5-minute walk, and consider the Rembrandt-related route to the Westerkerk, where he is buried. The Rijksmuseum holds The Night Watch a short tram ride away, so the house works well as the personal counterpart to the national collection. Museumkaart holders enter free and should still reserve a slot where the site asks.
