Sobre Burj Khalifa

Burj Khalifa stands 828 metres tall, the record confirmed by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat when it opened on 4 January 2010, making it the world's tallest structure by a margin of over 190 metres. The tower's Y-shaped floor plan, designed by Adrian Smith at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, buttresses a central hexagonal core with three wings that spiral upward and taper as they rise, a geometry derived from the six-petalled Hymenocallis desert flower and from the stepped, spiralling minarets of medieval Islamic architecture. The exterior cladding uses 26,000 hand-cut reflective glass panels set into aluminium and textured stainless-steel spandrel panels, chosen specifically to withstand Dubai's summer heat while reflecting rather than absorbing solar radiation. The At the Top observation experience occupies Level 124 (452 metres) and Level 125, both reached by double-deck elevators that travel at up to 10 metres per second - among the fastest lift systems in the world. The premium SKY deck on Level 148, at 555 metres, is the highest outdoor observation terrace on Earth, positioned within the tower's spire section above the last habitable floor.

Mejor momento del día: Sunset slot. Roughly 30 minutes before sunset for the transition from daylight skyline to lit-up city, though this is the highest-demand and highest-priced window; early morning (08:30-10:00) is the quietest and cheapest option with clear haze-free visibility.

Historia de Burj Khalifa

Construction began in January 2004 and used more than 45,000 cubic metres of concrete poured largely at night to counter the daytime heat, along with 39,000 tonnes of structural steel rebar - reportedly enough to stretch a quarter of the way around the world if laid end to end. The building was originally named Burj Dubai during construction; it was renamed Burj Khalifa at its opening ceremony in honour of Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE and ruler of Abu Dhabi, whose government extended financial support to Dubai during the 2009 debt crisis that had put the project's completion at risk.

The tower held several engineering firsts on completion, including the tallest freestanding structure and the building with the most floors (163 above ground) in the world at the time. Its buttressed-core structural system, pioneered specifically for this project, has since been adapted for other supertall towers globally.

Normas y etiqueta en Burj Khalifa

Timed-entry tickets specify an exact slot; arriving more than 15 minutes late can mean rebooking at the counter for a later, often costlier, slot subject to availability. Tripods and monopods are prohibited on Level 124/125 due to space constraints during peak hours, though handheld cameras and phones are unrestricted. Security screening (airport-style, with bag scanning) is mandatory before the elevator queue, and large backpacks or luggage must be left at the mall's baggage counter, not carried to the tower entrance.

Dress code is smart-casual with no specific religious modesty requirement, since the deck is a secular observation platform, but swimwear or beachwear draws attention from staff. Drones are prohibited both inside and in the surrounding Downtown Dubai precinct without a permit from the Dubai Civil Aviation Authority.

Consejos para visitar Burj Khalifa

  1. 1

Book online at least 24-48 hours ahead; walk-up counter tickets on Level 1 of The Dubai Mall routinely cost double the advance online price and sell out on weekend evenings. The non-prime morning slots (08:30-13:00) offer the same 360-degree view at the lowest price tier and the shortest elevator queue.

  2. 2

The entrance for At the Top ticket holders is via the Dubai Mall's Waterfront/Lower Ground level, sign-posted separately from the general mall entrances - allow 15 extra minutes to locate it on a first visit, particularly during Dubai Mall's peak weekend footfall. Combining the visit with the Dubai Fountain show at dusk works logistically: exit the tower, walk the mall's waterfront promenade, and time arrival at the fountain for one of the evening performances running every 30 minutes from 18:00.
