À propos de Karlskirche (St. Charles's Church)
Karlskirche charges EUR 9.50 for adults and EUR 6 for students, as of 2026, and is Vienna's grandest baroque church, built as a plague votive by Emperor Charles VI. The building fuses a Greek temple portico, two free-standing columns modelled on Trajan's Column in Rome, and an oval green copper dome, all set on Karlsplatz at the edge of the Innere Stadt. Karlskirche is built in pale stone with green copper roofs, and its interior is a single oval hall painted from floor to lantern. Since 2021 visitors can ride the panorama lift up towards the dome for a close look at Johann Michael Rottmayr's fresco, which shows Saint Charles Borromeo pleading with God to end the plague.
Meilleur moment de la journée : 09:00 - 10:30. When the interior is quiet; late afternoon suits the outside view across the pond in front.

Histoire de Karlskirche (St. Charles's Church)
Karlskirche was vowed by Emperor Charles VI in 1713, when a plague epidemic swept Vienna, and he dedicated the church to his name saint, Charles Borromeo, a 16th-century cardinal venerated for tending plague victims. The architect Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach won the commission and began building in 1716; after his death in 1723 his son Joseph Emanuel completed the church, which was largely finished in 1737.
Karlskirche's two columns are carved with spiral reliefs of scenes from the life of Saint Charles Borromeo, in imitation of Trajan's Column, and its tall dome blends Roman, Byzantine and baroque references. Rottmayr's dome fresco was painted in the late 1720s, and the high altar carries silver candelabras and an ivory crucifix gifted by Emperor Joseph II. The organ's baroque case dates from 1739, with additions of 1847.
Règles et étiquette à Karlskirche (St. Charles's Church)
Karlskirche is a working church with daily Mass, and visitors are expected to dress modestly, with shoulders and knees covered, and to keep phones silent. Sightseeing pauses during services. Photography without flash is generally tolerated, but tripods may be restricted, and worshippers praying in the side chapels should not be photographed.
Karlskirche's panorama lift and terrace are reached with the standard ticket, and third-party sources report that the lift stops running 15 minutes before closing. Space at the top is limited, so follow staff instructions, and note that a lift ride and a raised platform may not suit visitors who dislike heights.
Conseils pour visiter Karlskirche (St. Charles's Church)
- 1
Karlskirche is best seen from outside first: cross Karlsplatz to the pond in front and take in the columns, portico and dome together before you go in. The interior, with the oval dome and coloured marble, is compact, so an hour is enough, but book time for the panorama lift because it is the only way to see Rottmayr's fresco at close range.

Karlskirche's neighbours include the Vienna State Opera, a 10-minute walk, and the Naschmarkt, 5 minutes away, so a morning at the church followed by lunch at the market is easy. Karlsplatz U-Bahn pavilions by Otto Wagner, built in 1898, stand beside the church and are worth a photograph; pickpockets work the crowded U-Bahn station, so keep bags closed.
