À propos de Naschmarkt

Naschmarkt is free to enter and stretches about 1.5 kilometres along the Wienzeile, with produce stalls, cheese counters, spice merchants and restaurants housed in pavilions built over the covered Wien River. The market is closed on Sundays, as of 2026, and the Saturday flea market at its southwestern end has run since 1977. Naschmarkt takes its name from the older Aschenmarkt, a 16th-century ash market, and the modern layout dates to the early 1900s when the Wien River was vaulted over and the first pavilions were built in 1902. The stalls pile up olives, dried fruit, horseradish, pickles, freshly baked bread, halva, Turkish delight and Viennese sausages, with sit-down restaurants offering everything from sushi to Kaiserschmarrn.

Meilleur moment de la journée : 08:00 - 10:00. On a weekday for shopping at the stalls before crowds, or Saturday from 09:00 to combine the food stalls with the flea market.

Histoire de Naschmarkt

Naschmarkt began as the Aschenmarkt in the 16th century, and by 1780 the fruit and vegetable trade had moved to its present area near Wiedner Hauptstrasse. From 1793 all farm produce arriving in Vienna by cart had to be sold there. The covering of the Wien River between 1898 and 1902, part of the Vienna Stadtbahn project designed under Otto Wagner, gave the market its long, level stretch and its first pavilions.

Naschmarkt's architecture includes Wagner's Majolikahaus at Linke Wienzeile 40, faced in floral majolica tiles, and the neighbouring Medaillonhaus at number 38, whose facade carries gilded stucco medallions. The flea market began in 1977 in an adjacent area along the Wienzeile, and the market today mixes traditional produce stalls with restaurants serving cuisines from across Europe, the Middle East and Asia.

Règles et étiquette à Naschmarkt

Naschmarkt vendors are used to photographers, but it is polite to ask before photographing an individual stallholder or their goods. Tasting samples are common, but pressing yourself on a stall without buying is bad manners. Prices for fruit, vegetables and spices are usually displayed per kilogram or per 100 grams, so check before ordering and ask for the total before handing over money.

Naschmarkt restaurants follow the Austrian custom of rounding up the bill by about 5 to 10 percent for good service, said aloud when you pay, not left on the table. Flea market sellers accept haggling but expect cash.

Conseils pour visiter Naschmarkt

  1. 1

Naschmarkt is best approached from the Kettenbrückengasse end, where the stalls skew toward locals, and walked toward Karlsplatz; the section nearest the city centre carries the most tourist-oriented restaurants, with touts inviting passers-by to sit and menus that are priced above the market average. Check prices per kilogram for fruit and dried goods before buying, and compare with a neighbouring stall.

  2. 2

Naschmarkt is a good place for a quick breakfast or lunch: look for stalls with a queue of office workers rather than a hawker. Pickpockets work the crowded lanes on Saturday, so carry a zipped bag in front, and bring cash for small stalls and the flea market. Wagner's tiled buildings on Linke Wienzeile, beside the market, are worth a short detour, and Karlskirche is a 5-minute walk away.
