À propos de Schönbrunn Palace

Schönbrunn Palace charges EUR 30 for the State Apartments and EUR 42 for the Palace Ticket, as of 2026, and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with 1,441 rooms. The Habsburgs used the plastered palace, painted in the yellow known as Schönbrunn yellow, as their summer residence, with a French-style park behind it that runs up to the hilltop Gloriette colonnade. Schönbrunn Palace shows visitors only a small fraction of its rooms: white-and-gold stucco, mirrors, chandeliers, crystal and painted ceilings in the Great Gallery, plus the Millions Room, panelled in rosewood and set with Indo-Persian miniatures. Emperor Franz Joseph was born here in 1830 and died in the palace on 21 November 1916, and his working rooms in the Palace Ticket route are plain by comparison.

Histoire de Schönbrunn Palace

Schönbrunn Palace took its present form in the mid-18th century when Empress Maria Theresa had the architect Nikolaus Pacassi remodel and enlarge the palace that was begun in the 1690s to a design by Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach. The Habsburgs used it as their main summer residence, and by legend the six-year-old Mozart played for Maria Theresa in the Mirror Room in 1762, a claim repeated in guidebooks but hard to document beyond his known Vienna visit that year.

The Gloriette on the hill was completed in 1775 as the park's terminal monument, and the Tiergarten Schönbrunn, founded in 1752 on the grounds, is regarded as the world's oldest zoo still in operation. Emperor Charles I signed his renunciation of participation in state affairs at Schönbrunn on 11 November 1918, effectively ending Habsburg rule, and the palace and gardens joined the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1996. The Palm House, a wrought-iron and glass structure of 1882, remains in the gardens.

Règles et étiquette à Schönbrunn Palace

Schönbrunn Palace admits visitors to the interior at fixed time slots, so buy a timed ticket in advance and arrive 10 minutes early with your ID if you claim a concession. Photography inside the State Apartments is generally not permitted, and large bags and backpacks must go in the cloakroom, so check the house rules at the entrance.

Schönbrunn's park is public and free to enter, but the Gloriette platform and Maze are ticketed separately, either through the Classic Pass or the Exclusive Gardens ticket. Garden closing times shorten in winter, so check them if you plan a late walk.

Conseils pour visiter Schönbrunn Palace

  1. 1

Schönbrunn Palace is easy to overspend on: the State Apartments and the Palace Ticket differ in which rooms you see, so decide between the shorter and longer route when you book. The Classic Pass at EUR 49 for adults, as of 2026, covers the palace plus Privy Garden, Orangery, Maze and Gloriette, which suits a full day, while the free park allows a walk up to the Gloriette hill with panoramic views if you skip the paid platform.

  2. 2

Schönbrunn coach groups arrive from about 10:00, so a first-slot booking avoids the worst queues. Avoid unofficial tour sellers on the forecourt, and buy tickets only on the palace's official ticket page, because some third-party resellers charge more for the same entry.
