À propos de Franciscan Monastery and Pharmacy

Franciscan Monastery and Pharmacy in Dubrovnik charges about EUR 10 for adults, as of 2026, and its pharmacy, founded in 1317, is reported to be one of the oldest still operating in Europe. The complex stands inside Pile Gate on Stradun and centres on a late-Romanesque cloister of paired columns whose capitals are carved with faces, animals and foliage. A museum of liturgical objects, manuscripts and pharmacy equipment sits off the cloister, and a library holds early printed books and manuscripts.

Meilleur moment de la journée : 09:00 to 10:30. Before groups from Pile Gate reach the cloister.

Histoire de Franciscan Monastery and Pharmacy

Franciscan Monastery in Dubrovnik began as a friary in the 13th century and moved inside the city walls in the 14th century, when the cloister was built by local master Mihoe Brajkov of Bar. The pharmacy, run by the Little Brothers (Mala Braća), is dated to 1317 and served both the community and the town as a public dispensary.

Franciscan Monastery lost its original church in the 1667 earthquake, and the present church, entered from Stradun, was rebuilt in Baroque style, though the cloister survived. In the 1991 siege the complex suffered shell damage and was repaired. The pharmacy remains in operation and now sells cosmetics and natural products made from historic recipes, while the exhibits show mortars, scales, jars and recipe books from earlier centuries. The complex has been a working religious house for more than seven centuries, which explains why the pharmacy counter, the cloister garden and the church sit within a few metres of each other and share the same stone walls.

Règles et étiquette à Franciscan Monastery and Pharmacy

Franciscan Monastery and Pharmacy is an active religious community, so shoulders and knees must be covered and swimwear is not accepted; staff at the entrance enforce this. Silence is expected in the church and cloister, and flash and photography of the pharmacy's older objects may be restricted.

Franciscan Monastery's cloister is quiet by design, so avoid group conversations there. The church is separate from the museum ticket and open for prayer, so behave as in any working church, and do not photograph worshippers. The floors are limestone and slippery when wet, and stair access to some museum rooms is limited.

Conseils pour visiter Franciscan Monastery and Pharmacy

  1. 1

Franciscan Monastery and Pharmacy is best visited at 09:00, since it sits beside Pile Gate and tour groups reach it by 10:30; the cloister is a rare shaded rest close to the main entrance. Buy the museum ticket only if you want the cloister and exhibits; the church and the pharmacy shop are accessible without one.

  2. 2

Franciscan Monastery's pharmacy sells creams and balms made from monastery recipes, which make a more useful souvenir than the stalls outside. Photograph the Baroque church facade from Stradun on the way in, and note the carved Pietà relief above the church portal, then combine the visit with Onofrio's Fountain next door and a stroll along Stradun, and check current ticket inclusion if you hold the Dubrovnik Pass or the 10-museum combined ticket, since sources conflict.
