À propos de Stradun and the Old Town
Stradun in Dubrovnik runs about 300 metres from Pile Gate to Luža Square and costs nothing to walk, as of 2026. The street is paved in polished limestone, worn smooth over centuries, and it is lined with uniform three-storey stone houses that give the Old Town its coherent, almost stage-set look. Traffic has been excluded from the historic core, so the street works as the city's promenade, meeting place and route for civic celebrations, with Onofrio's Fountain at the west end and the Bell Tower at the east.
Meilleur moment de la journée : Before 08:00 or after 20:00. When the limestone is nearly empty of day visitors.

Histoire de Stradun and the Old Town
Stradun was once a shallow channel separating the Latin island of Ragusium from the Slavic settlement of Dubrava, which was filled in and paved during the 12th to 13th centuries. Its name comes from the Venetian-Italian strada, meaning street, and locals still call it Placa.
Dubrovnik's catastrophic earthquake of 1667 flattened much of the city, and the Republic of Ragusa rebuilt Stradun to a single plan with regulated facades, matching stone doorways and arched shop fronts. That is why the street looks planned rather than accreted. The wider Old Town was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1979 and shelled during the siege of 1991-92, after which the roofs and street surface were restored.
Règles et étiquette à Stradun and the Old Town
Dubrovnik's Old Town has a set of visitor rules under the city's Respect the City programme: wheeled suitcases are banned on the stone streets, swimwear and bare chests are not accepted away from beaches, and sitting or eating on the monument steps is discouraged. Fines exist for the more serious breaches, though amounts change - as of 2026, verify with the city or the Dubrovnik Tourist Board before travel, and note that these rules apply inside the walls rather than on the beaches outside.
Stradun's limestone becomes very slippery after rain, so flat-soled shoes matter more than fashion. Cruise days are managed by the city with a cap of two ships and a target of about 8,000 cruise passengers a day, and a stated comfort ceiling of roughly 4,000 people in the Old Town at once; sources differ on how strictly these numbers are enforced, so treat them as targets.
Conseils pour visiter Stradun and the Old Town
- 1
Stradun is best walked at 07:00 to 08:00 or after 20:00 from July to September, when cruise-ship crowds have left and the limestone reflects the evening light. The street is also a photo location for screen productions including the Star Wars film The Last Jedi and Game of Thrones, which explains the constant groups.
- 2
Dubrovnik's Prijeko street, the lane running parallel to Stradun, is known for touts and fixed-price tourist menus at inflated prices; walk one street further, or eat outside the walls in Lapad or Gruž, for better value. Pickpocketing is reported around Pile Gate and Stradun in peak hours, so carry phones and wallets in a front pocket. Restaurant tipping is customary at roughly 10 percent or rounding up, given directly to staff.
