Bihar sits at the hinge of Indian civilisation — a state whose alluvial plains fed the Mauryan and Gupta empires, produced two of the world's great religions, and gave the subcontinent its first codified administration. Patna, the ancient Pataliputra, was the nerve centre from which Chandragupta Maurya and his grandson Ashoka governed a territory stretching from Afghanistan to Karnataka. Today, those same plains carry a rawer energy: crowded ghats on the Ganges, diesel-heavy market towns, and pilgrimage corridors packed with monks in saffron and maroon robes from a dozen nations.

The state's claim on the global Buddhist circuit is unassailable. Bodh Gaya, where Siddhartha Gautama attained enlightenment under a pipal tree around 528 BCE, remains the single most important site in Buddhist geography. Nalanda, 95 kilometres to the north, once housed the world's largest residential university — at its peak in the 7th century CE, it sheltered 10,000 students and a library of nine million manuscripts. Rajgir, the ancient Rajagriha, was the Buddha's preferred retreat during the monsoon months. These are not archaeological abstractions; they are living pilgrimage destinations that receive hundreds of thousands of visitors annually from Japan, South Korea, Thailand, Sri Lanka, China, and Myanmar.

Travelling Bihar demands patience. Infrastructure outside Patna and Gaya is uneven — roads improve after election cycles and deteriorate quietly between them. Auto-rickshaws in Bodh Gaya will attempt fares three to four times the reasonable rate for foreign faces; the correct rate between the temple complex and the main market is ₹30–₹50. Carry cash, as ATMs in smaller towns frequently run dry during harvest season. The best window is October through February, when the air is clear and pilgrimage traffic peaks without the brutal summer heat that tops 45°C. Bihar is not a state for passive tourism; it rewards deliberate, historically literate travel.
