À propos de Merdeka Square
Merdeka Square is the grass field in front of the Sultan Abdul Samad Building where the British flag came down and the Malayan flag went up at midnight on 30-31 August 1957, marking independence. A 95-metre flagpole at the southern end is among the tallest in the world, and a black marble plaque marks the spot where the flag was first raised. The square was a cricket pitch first, the Selangor Club Padang, and it now sits at the centre of the colonial-era Kuala Lumpur core, with the Royal Selangor Club and St Mary's Cathedral on its edges.
Meilleur moment de la journée : 07:30 - 09:30. Before the heat builds, or after 19:00 when the Sultan Abdul Samad Building is lit.

Histoire de Merdeka Square
Merdeka Square began as the Selangor Club Padang, the cricket ground of the British administrative quarter, and takes its modern name from merdeka, the Malay word for independence. The Sultan Abdul Samad Building on its west side was built between 1894 and 1897, opened on 4 April 1897, and designed by A.C. Norman, R.A.J. Bidwell and A.B. Hubback, with much of the final design credited to Bidwell. Its Indo-Saracenic style, built with red brick, white plaster banding and copper-clad domes, is sometimes called blood-and-bandages for its colour scheme.
Merdeka Square's clock tower stands 41 metres tall, its clock by Gillett & Johnston of Croydon, in a design meant to echo Big Ben in a Moorish idiom. The Sultan Abdul Samad Building housed colonial government offices and later the courts, and today houses the Ministry of Heritage, Culture and Arts. A major conservation programme under the Warisan KL initiative ran from 2025 to February 2026 on the building, and the square hosts the National Day parade and cultural events on 31 August.
Règles et étiquette à Merdeka Square
Merdeka Square is public ground with no fixed opening hours, no bag check and no dress code, though barriers and road closures go up around National Day on 31 August and during state events. The Royal Selangor Club and St Mary's Cathedral on the edges are private or active worship spaces and are not open to casual entry.
Merdeka Square's Sultan Abdul Samad Building is a working government and heritage site, so interior areas can restrict photography, flash and access at short notice, and staff decide what is open on a given day. Drones require permission from the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia, so leave them at the hotel. The flag plaque and flagpole mark the independence moment, so stand back and let others photograph them in turn. Street sellers and unofficial guides approach visitors at the edge of the field, and agreeing a price before a photo or a tour avoids a dispute afterward.
Conseils pour visiter Merdeka Square
- 1
Merdeka Square works best at two times of day: 07:30 to 09:30, when the field is cool and empty, and after 19:00, when the Sultan Abdul Samad Building is lit against the sky. Midday temperatures often exceed 32 °C in Kuala Lumpur with high humidity and afternoon thunderstorms, so carry water and skip the field between 12:00 and 15:00.

Merdeka Square sits within a 5-minute walk of Central Market, and near the Kuala Lumpur City Gallery and the old Kuala Lumpur Railway Station, so a compact heritage loop is easy on foot. The Kuala Lumpur City Gallery beside the field shows a scale model of the city and sells souvenirs; its opening hours should be checked on the day. The Sultan Abdul Samad Building reopened Block 1 on 2 February 2026 after conservation work, so confirm what the interior offers before building a plan around it.
