The Rembrandt House Museum stands in what was Amsterdam's Jewish quarter, and the house was built around 1606 and renovated about 1627. Rembrandt paid 13,000 guilders in 1639, a large sum that he could not sustain after his fortunes fell, and the property was auctioned in 1658 for 11,000 guilders. The 1656 inventory listed the contents room by room, which later curators used as a script for the interior.

The city bought the decayed building in 1907, and architect Karel de Bazel restored it between 1907 and 1911. The museum opened on 10 June 1911. The house served as Rembrandt's home, studio and art dealership, and the ground-floor kitchen and the light of the first-floor studio remain the clearest way to picture his working day.
