St. John in the Wilderness Church stands in a deodar forest at Forsyth Ganj, on the road between lower Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj, and was built in 1852 in neo-Gothic style using local grey stone rather than the red sandstone common to plains-India colonial churches. The church takes its unusual name literally: the surrounding deodar stand was genuinely uncleared wilderness when British administrators and Gurkha regiment officers first worshipped here in the 1850s, a contrast the current dense tree cover still preserves. Its most visited feature is the grave of James Bruce, 8th Earl of Elgin, Viceroy of British India, who died at Dharamshala in November 1863 while in office and was buried in the churchyard; his wife, Lady Elgin, donated the church's Belgian stained-glass windows in his memory, and they remain the building's most striking interior detail.
