عن Buckingham Palace

Buckingham Palace has 775 rooms, including 19 State Rooms open to visitors during the summer opening, and has served as the official London residence of the British monarch since Queen Victoria moved in in 1837. The building began life in 1703 as Buckingham House, a townhouse for John Sheffield, Duke of Buckingham, bought by George III in 1761 before John Nash remodelled it into a palace for George IV from 1825, facing the original brick in Bath stone. The east front facing the Mall, the image most visitors recognise, is later still: Edward Blore added it in 1850, and Sir Aston Webb refaced it in Portland stone as part of the 1913 Victoria Memorial scheme. The State Rooms sequence runs through the Grand Staircase, the Throne Room, and the Picture Gallery, the last of which holds works by Rembrandt, Vermeer, and Rubens drawn from the Royal Collection, one of the largest and most significant art collections still in private ownership anywhere. The Ballroom, the largest of the State Rooms at 36.6 metres long, hosts state banquets and is dressed for the public opening with pieces from the Royal Collection's gold and silver plate.

أفضل وقت في اليوم: 09:30. At the first entry slot for the State Rooms, which are timed-ticket only; for the free Changing the Guard ceremony, arrive by 10:00 for an 10:45–11:00 start and stake a spot along the railings before the forecourt fills.

تاريخ Buckingham Palace

Buckingham House was built in 1703 for John Sheffield, first Duke of Buckingham and Normanby, on a site previously used as a mulberry garden planted under James I for a failed silk-production scheme. George III purchased the house in 1761 for £21,000 as a private residence for Queen Charlotte, and it became known as the Queen's House, a family home rather than a seat of court ceremony, which remained at St James's Palace.

George IV commissioned John Nash in 1825 to transform the house into a full palace, a project that ran over budget and remained unfinished at George IV's death in 1830; his successor William IV never moved in. Queen Victoria was the first monarch to take up residence, in July 1837, and it was under her that the East Front — including the balcony used for royal appearances — was added in 1850 to accommodate a growing family.

The Palace sustained nine direct bomb hits during the Blitz, one of which destroyed the Chapel in September 1940 while the King and Queen were in residence; the current Queen's Gallery occupies part of the site rebuilt after that damage. The State Rooms have opened to public visitors each summer since 1993, a policy introduced under Elizabeth II partly to help fund the restoration of Windsor Castle after its 1992 fire.

القواعد والآداب في Buckingham Palace

Buckingham Palace's State Rooms prohibit photography and filming throughout the interior; visitors may photograph freely once back outside in the Garden, which forms the final stage of the self-guided route. Large bags, suitcases, and rucksacks beyond small daypack size are not permitted and there is no cloakroom, so plan luggage-free.

The Changing the Guard ceremony outside the railings is free and unticketed but does not run daily — as of 2026 it typically takes place on alternating days, and schedules are published on the official Household Division website roughly a week ahead; arriving without checking risks a wasted trip. Crowd barriers along the Mall and around the Victoria Memorial fill from 45 minutes before the ceremony's start in peak summer months.

Security screening at the State Rooms entrance mirrors airport procedure, with bag scanning and a walk-through metal detector; allow 20–30 minutes for the queue during the July–August peak.

نصائح لزيارة Buckingham Palace

  1. 1

Buckingham Palace's summer State Rooms opening sells out its earliest morning slots first, so booking several weeks ahead through rct.uk secures the 09:30 entry that avoids the midday queue building along Buckingham Gate.

  2. 2

The adjoining Queen's Gallery and the Royal Mews, which houses the state coaches and working horses, are both bookable on a combined ticket and are rarely as crowded — worth prioritising for photography, since the State Rooms themselves forbid cameras.

  3. 3

For Changing the Guard without the densest crowd, watch from the Wellington Barracks side on Birdcage Walk rather than the Palace railings, where the view is less obstructed and the crowd thinner. St James's Park, immediately south, offers a clear long-range photograph of the Palace's east front across the lake and has no entry fee or ticketing.
